Character Interview with Derek Carmichael from Unexpectedly Yours
Radio Interviewer: Today we are hosting Derek Carmichael, celebrity TV carpenter and sought after furniture craftsman, who’s taken time out from his busy schedule to answer some of our questions. Welcome to the show, Derek!
Derek: Thanks! It’s good to be here.
Interviewer: Derek, can you tell us how you became a carpenter and TV presenter?
Derek: When I was younger, I hung out a lot at my best friend’s house, and it was his grandfather, Grandpa Joe, who first taught me woodworking skills. I loved it from the very beginning and started my apprenticeship while I was still in high school. I moved to LA, started a business with a friend, and from there got asked to do a segment on a TV lifestyle show that became a semi-permanent gig.
Interviewer: You’ve been spotted hanging out with several gorgeous women yet you’re still single. What in your mind makes for the perfect partner?
Derek: Ah, that’s a tricky question. I don’t keep a list of requirements in my mind, you know. In my opinion it’s all about the chemistry; that’s something that can’t be faked, and without it, the relationship won’t work, even if all the imaginary boxes are ticked. But wait, let me just back up a second. I’m not looking for a relationship. I’m too busy with my furniture business, plus I have some family issues to take care off. So, yeah, no relationships for me.
Interviewer: Care to expand on these family issues?
Derek: No, I’d rather not.
Interviewer: Er, okay. Um, I know you just said you’re not looking for a relationship, but for all your female fans out there can you describe what your idea of a dream date would be?
Derek: Sure. We’re talking fantasy here, right? My dream date would be a quiet picnic down by the lake at a secret spot I know. We’d eat chicken salad and pecan pie, with some iced tea or wine. We’d go for a swim and then lie on a picnic rug and, well, I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.
Interviewer: Ooh, that sounds romantic. You’re sure about that no relationship thing?
Derek: Very sure.
Interviewer: So, pecan pie, huh? Is that your favorite pie?
Derek: Yep. Has been ever since I was fourteen.
Interviewer: Hmm, perhaps a secret way to your heart, then? All right, I can see from your expression you’re not going to answer that! Well, I guess that’s a hint for all your female fans. Ladies, get baking!
Derek: (laughs) Please, no.
Interview: (chuckles) I’m guessing you might be inundated with pecan pies now. Derek, thanks for sitting down and chatting with us.
Derek: Thanks for having me, and I’m wishing I didn’t mention the pecan pie thing.

But convincing her to see him as more than just the kid she used to know is another story.
Hannah Willmett can’t believe how grown-up Derek Carmichael has become. The troubled kid from her youth has turned into a sexy, successful TV celebrity, but Hannah’s wary of his player past and the rampant rumors connecting him to beautiful socialites. Still, she can’t help but give in when their attraction reaches a boiling point.
Trying to keep their fling a secret from her overprotective brother is one thing, but when Hannah finds herself unexpectedly expecting, her life is thrown upside down. She and Derek may be becoming parents together, but that’s no basis for a happily-ever-after.

“Yeah. I guess I’m still adjusting to all this.” She gestured around the bar. “Being single,” she explained.
“Oh.” He wiped condensation from his glass. “I doubt you’ll have any problems in that department. You’re very…attractive.”
Hell, why had he hesitated? Because every adjective that came to mind—sexy, hot, beautiful—seemed inappropriate. But now it sounded like he was damning her with faint praise.
Her cheeks turned pink. “Derek, I wasn’t fishing for a compliment.”
“I didn’t think you were. I was only stating the truth.”
“I’m not looking for a man.”
“Maybe not, but you ought to know men are still going to hit on you.” Now that he’d started blurting out the truth, he couldn’t stop.
She gave a stifled laugh. “Okay.”
A strand of hair clung to her cheek, and he had to stop himself from sliding his fingers around the curve of her face. Heat rolled in his veins, sent a rush of blood to his head. He’d had a crush on her since he was fourteen, and finally he could do something about it. This was his chance, here in this anonymous bar, with the alcohol smoothing out the edges, and Hannah flirting with him for the first time ever.
“In case you didn’t know, I’m hitting on you right now.”
She sat bolt upright like a startled cat, but the emotion flashing across her face told him she wasn’t completely shocked. She was aware of the undercurrent of attraction tugging between them, though she might have tried to ignore it.
“I-I…” she stuttered before she grabbed her glass and downed it in one long gulp. “I wasn’t expecting that!”
“Are you mad?”
“Of course not. How could I be mad at you?” Flipping her hair, she slanted him a sideways glance. “In fact, I admit I’m kinda flattered.”
The heat in that glance set his blood humming again. “Just kinda?”
