Five Scandals with Emily Greenwood
It didn’t take much for a woman to become a scandal in Regency England. Accidentally show too much ankle, or dance too much with a man who’s not your husband or fiancé, and soon everyone in Society is talking about you.
And then there are those who like to give people something to talk about, like the heroine of my new release, HOW TO HANDLE A SCANDAL. Elizabeth Tarryton grew up with a doting papa and no mother. As sometimes happens when a parent is too doting, she got used to being the center of attention, and she was heartbroken when her father remarried and seemed to forget about her.
Beautiful, good-hearted, and outrageous, Eliza eventually discovered that there were other people who would pay attention to her… gentlemen loved Eliza and her bold, flirtatious ways, and she loved them. It wasn’t long before she was doing ever more scandalous things, like:
- Learning how to curse. When Eliza was a teenager, she and her father lived on the island of Malta, and he allowed her to roam freely. After he married her stepmother, Eliza started spending time at the docks, flirting with sailors, chatting up prostitutes, and picking up all kinds of words ladies weren’t supposed to know. As soon as her stepmother found out what she was doing, though, Eliza’s doom was sealed: she was sent to boarding school in England, which is when readers first meet her in THE BEAUTIFUL ONE, Book 1 in The Scandalous Sisters series.
- Getting thrown out of school. Eliza hated boarding school, and she dreamed of the day when her uncle Will, Viscount Grandville, would rescue her from the boredom of life there and the snobbery of the other girls. But he didn’t come for her, even when tragedy struck and her father and stepmother died from a fever. So Eliza schemed to get herself thrown out of school—and succeeded when she was discovered kissing a lieutenant from the local militia in the school garden at midnight.
- Jumping into a fountain in London. Eventually Will took Eliza into his home, and the two of them grew close. Eliza adores Will and doesn’t want to disappoint him, but she thinks he worries too much about a little harmless fun. Is it really so bad that she jumped into a fountain one night in London? Well, yes, considering she was with gentlemen and her dress got soaked. At the start of HOW TO HANDLE A SCANDAL, Will warns her that her flirty, outrageous ways may cause real trouble.
- Sneaking into a gentlemen’s club. On a dare, Eliza went in through a back door at White’s Club and slipped unnoticed into the salon, where she hid behind some drapes. She had a wonderful time relating snippets of what she heard to her friend Meg afterward.
- Kissing a gentleman in public. There was mistletoe involved, and a handsome man she’d just met. When Eliza went to London for her first Season, she just wanted to have fun, and unlike most of the debutantes, she didn’t want to rush into marriage. Which is why it’s such a disaster when her friend Tommy Halifax proposes to her in front of a packed ballroom. She unthinkingly breaks his heart and humiliates him. He promptly leaves England for India, and a remorseful Eliza vows to put aside her scandalous ways and dedicate herself to being a virtuous woman. Does it work? When Tommy returns to England six years later, everyone tells him she’s changed, but he doesn’t believe it. And maybe he’s right… but he’s just the man to handle the scandal that is Eliza.

THEY THOUGHT THE DEBUTANTE WAS SCANDALOUS
Miss Elizabeth Tarryton was the toast of the London Season the year she was seventeen and spurned young Tommy Halifax. A careless flirt who didn’t know what she wanted, she was startled into laughter by his public proposal of marriage. Furious and heartbroken, Tommy promptly left home for a life of adventure in India.
IF THEY ONLY KNEW ABOUT THE WIDOW
Seven years later, Elizabeth has much to make up for, but the methods she chooses for doing good are as shocking as her earlier wanton behavior-should the ton ever find out. Tommy returns to England a hero, with no intention of allowing himself to be hurt by a woman ever again, but he’s fascinated nonetheless by Elizabeth, now widowed and more alluring than ever.
