February 2016 Recap & March Preview

SUMMARY

Of my blog posts this month, I was most proud of my interview with Melanie Hansen. I was so indecisive about doing the interview, because I wanted to write it a certain way. I wanted it to read like a feature article, not a Q&A. But I don’t trust my mood and was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to pull it off if I was depressed. I almost didn’t go through with it because Unquiet was a tough read for me, but I believed in the book and wanted people to know why it’s important. I had scheduled the interview to go live on Feb 1st, so I sent Melanie my questions the 1st week of January. She returned the questions about a week and a half before I had scheduled it, because I needed time to put it all together and write it up the way I had imagined it. Melanie was really great about it and gave me a lot to work with. It didn’t get as many views as I had hoped, and I didn’t get much feedback, but Melanie said she liked it. My therapist was very encouraging and supportive. But I don’t know if I’ll ever write another interview like this. It’s a lot of work and stress for me, because of my disability. So, to me, it was quite an achievement. This blog is a hobby; it fills up my days and makes me feel productive. As long as I don’t get carried away when my mood is up or when I’m experiencing strong emotions, it seems to be good for my mental health.

The review I most liked writing: BETWEEN GHOSTS by Garrett Leigh. It took me a few days after reading it to sit down and write the review, because the novel hit me so hard.

The review I most disliked writing: STRONG SIGNAL by Megan Erickson & Santino Hassell. I seriously agonized over this one and revised it so many godawful times, and I still don’t like how it turned out. So wordy! And that word “underbelly” is so cliche and slightly pretentious I would never use it in my own work. But I don’t have it in me to revise it again. Ironically, as of today, Feb 29th, it is the top Amazon customer review for STRONG SIGNAL, with 9 of 10 customers voting it helpful. I might have just jinxed myself, but I wouldn’t mind not seeing my name on the top customer review for that title.
